David

Aged 77, David had led an active and healthy life. He particularly enjoyed squash, which he played for 30 years, and his daily walks, having had a knee replacement he had been forced to give up cycling. Little over a year ago David contracted COVID-19, worsening symptoms meant that he had to be hospitalised. Upon returning home and beginning his recovery David became aware of changes in his body, after some medical investigation he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease and Rheumatoid Arthritis. Parkinson's Disease is a condition in which parts of the brain become progressively damaged over many years, symptoms include tremors, slow movement, and stiff, inflexible muscles. A person with Parkinson's disease can also experience a wide range of other physical and psychological symptoms such as balance and memory problems, anxiety, and insomnia. Rheumatoid arthritis is a long-term condition that causes pain, swelling and stiffness in the joints. The condition usually affects the hands, feet and wrists.

Keen to maintain his health and manage his symptoms David’s met with his Nurse who suggested the MorphFit Gentle Movement Project. Since enrolling in the programme David hasn’t looked back. Initially beginning with seated exercises, he graduated to standing and within a few short weeks was working with equipment such as the treadmill and ski machine. Having had a knee replacement David was of the understanding that cycling was not a suitable exercise for him, however through some adjustments, expert guidance and support he has been able to get back on the bike, something that he’s very glad of. He currently moves with MorphFit twice each week as well as taking part in his daily walks.

Only 3 months into his gentle movement journey, David feels freer, and his walking has improved, and notes ‘It’s great for getting you up and going!’. He describes the group as ‘first class’ and Instructor, Nicola, ‘a star’. David also enjoys the social side of the sessions and always has a laugh and joke with his fellow service users.
