Linda

In late 2019, Linda experienced a bout of blurred vision as she drove to work, she joked with colleagues about having a late night and indulging in her favourite tipple, not knowing what lay ahead. Following an assessment with her GP further symptoms began to present themselves in the form of cognitive and mobility concerns.

Aged 58 Linda was diagnosed with Relapsing & Remitting Multiple Sclerosis (RRMS). Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a condition that can affect the brain and spinal cord, causing a wide range of potential symptoms, including problems with vision, arm or leg movement, sensation or balance, in RRMS people have attacks of new and old symptoms, this is called a relapse.

RRMS continued to affect Linda’s memory, her ability to walk unaided and drive and in early 2020 her journey took another twist when the UK was plunged into a national lockdown due to COVID-19. Navigating her diagnosis and being classified as vulnerable amidst a global pandemic Linda sought support from MS Scotland and MS Lanarkshire, who referred her on to the MorphFit Gentle Movement Project LTD, a fully funded digital exercise programme created in response to COVID-19 and developed specifically for special population groups. Having only ever participated in one online class previously, which she hadn’t been entirely sold on, Linda was dubious but decided to give it a go.

The MorphFit Gentle Movement Project provided Linda with the opportunity to exercise and from the safety of her own home. Since her first session in May 2020, Linda has logged on each and every week. Her early sessions saw her unable to lift the token lockdown ‘tin of beans weight’- she now proudly works out with 3kg dumbbells.

Sessions are delivered by experienced Instructor, Nicola, Linda commends Nicola’s dedication to the programme and its attendees, “She (Nicola) is amazing, she is the glue that holds the group together”. Nicolas's sessions are fun, varied and challenging, her style and encouragement ensures that participants develop their understanding and abilities in a safe and supported environment. Classes have given Linda the confidence and knowledge to also exercise independently. Through attending Linda acknowledges that her mental health has improved, her pain has decreased, and she feels less fatigued.

Being able to connect digitally is a lifeline for Linda, due to her circumstances she would be unable to attend a fitness programme at an onsite setting. The service is a community in itself, where users form key and lasting relationships, “We have a laugh, we care for and encourage one another”. The platform also provides a sounding board and the opportunity to interact with and relate to other MS patients far and wide.
